You can make beautiful and subtle – or wild and dramatic – antique mirrors using simple techniques and plenty of imagination and experimentation. The idea is to interfere with the mirror deposit before, during or after you pour it on the glass. Our Antique Silver Instructions offer several tips; we're sure you will discover other techniques on your own.
Thiourea crystals contain sulfur, the chemical that turns silver blue, purple and gray. Stannous chloride crystals turn silver brown and gold. Whiting sprinkled or dumped on the silver as it is depositing on the glass turns the silver pale gray. Silver Remover removes the silver to let the backing paint show through. The organic brownish gold of Gilsonite Asphaltum makes it the perfect backing paint for antique mirrors.
These compounds can also be used to create antique Gold, Copper and Galena Mirrors. Please see News & Notes for our latest discoveries.
