Galena Mirror Supplies
Galena mirrors are the color of polished hematite or the graphite in a "lead" pencil. On smooth glass, the dark, perfectly reflective surface is quiet and sophisticated. On textured glass, the effect is dramatic. As the Galena chemicals deposit on the glass, they change color from purple to blue to black. If you stop the deposition at the right time, you can capture these subtle variations which are especially noticeable on glue-chipped glass. Galena mirrors reflect 35% of the available light.
Galena mirrors are made by depositing a layer of lead sulfide on the glass. Lead is one of the most stable, least reactive metals on earth. Galena is the ancient name for lead sulfide. Galena mirrors are as easy to make as Silver mirrors. For complete instructions, please see our Sheet Glass Instructions, 3-D Glass Instructions or Blown Glass Instructions.
